The First Attempts, Part I

Klaus stumbled through the portal, realising that trying to run into it may have been a mistake as his spacesuit—a rejected relic from the Apollo program— rather clumsy to walk in, also failing spectacularly in its duty to protect him appeared to be on fire. As he emerged into the completely flat expanse on the other side he started to feel the intense heat, making his vision swim with a blinding white light.

The suit’s fabric seemed to react badly to portal travel as if it had been exposed to molten lava. The acrid smell of burning material filled the air in his helmet the suit’s seams and joints began to smoulder. It was only now that Klaus looked down in shock to see the grotesque sight of his lower half, or rather lack of it.

Fighting the urge to panic in complete hysteria at what was happening, a booming voice sounded TRY AGAIN! and before he could consider any, or none, of the options available to him. He was flung backward through the portal, and back into the Arctic laboratory where CERN first begin this experiment.

Emerging on the other side, the intense cold of the laboratory environment soothed his charred body. Relived to see that by some miracle his legs were attached once again to his body, the mission director walked over to him to ask what he had been doing for the past six hours.

It took him a few moments to realise that his spacesuit was missing.
